COMMENTS
Self-proclaimed as 'Weird circus metal', or 'Funky ass circus metal'.
Heroic Dose was a mess from the beginning... a sloppy, beautiful mess. Max, John, Jay and Jim made short work of creating the first concepts of the initial tunes and playing sporadically. Dave Mueller was brought on within a few months and things became interesting musically. The first EP, entitled 'Demo', was recorded at Junior's Motel in Otho, Iowa with engineering genius Kevin Miles at the helm in 1998. This enabled the group to begin branching out into the region.
In early 2000, Heroic Dose headed to SR Audio to work with Matt Sepanic for the first full-length album, 'Die Happy'. Upon its release, found itself as a regional name as well as earning a spot on Mancow's Lazer Luau in 1999 at Ankeny Airfield in Ankeny, Iowa. These performances led to a contract with Sickness Management. A few tours ensued but there were increasing tensions between the band and management. Shortly thereafter Dave left the band due to personal reasons.
With Dave's departure the band looked to rebrand and ride out the remainder of their contract so as not piss anyone off. John switched to rhythm guitar and classically trained Earl Thornton was brought in to take over bass guitar duties. Writing was reignited in a big way and the group once again found themselves playing in the Midwest's premier venues once again, completely self-managing as it should be.
For the recording of the third album, the boys once again headed to their home away from home, Junior's Motel, to take care of business. The music was fresh and worthy of the review from the first two but alas, it was not to be. Jim moved to Omaha for work and Earl left for Arizona in pursuit of his masters in music. The album just recently (at time of writing) saw daylight and is in the process of being remastered. Rumors of new material have been swirling but no official word from the band.
On the 'Demo' (1999), the track 'C.T.A.D.' stands for 'Chasing The American Dream'.
The track 'Judas' is considered to be quite rare and was meant to be a single but was never released at the time it was created. It was later released as a single in 2001. Jim says: "It was a one off engineered and produced by Sean McMahon at SR Audio. It was sent off to a few labels including Roadrunner. The first time we played it live was when we opened for Godsmack at Super Toad in Des Moines."
On the 'Instar' (2003) album, track 6 listed as being named 'Track 4' is actually called 'Culo De Chango'. Jim says: "The Track 4 name was one of those things where the label 'strongly discouraged' us using the actual name because it highly offensive. I used the name Track 4 to mess with people since it was indeed track 6. I'm odd that way. lol.". I did press Jim for what the actual name was, and he couldn't immediately remember but one of the site's contributors came back to me with the suggestion it may have been 'Culo De Chango', since apparently that literally translates to 'Monkey's ass' from Spanish... not to mention the fact that that's indeed one of the track names circulated on some of the incorrect tracklists for the album. After I jogged Jim's memory, he said: "I feel like it was Culo de Chango! I just remember us getting shot down for some stupid reason.". Note that 'Track 4' has since been verified as definitely being called 'Culo De Chango', as this site's author found two separate MP3s with their respective names and compared the actual audio... and the results were that they were the same!
Author's note: The 'Instar' (2003) album has a silly amount of conflicting and incorrect info about it online. Some sources say it was released in 2002, some say 2003, and some say it was unreleased. The tracklisting is also incorrect at just about every source, with the tracklist either being in the wrong order or songs missing altogether. The Discogs entry states 2002 as year of release and shows an incorrect tracklist, and the video description of an uploaded copy of the album on YouTube also states 2002 as year of release and again, has yet another incorrect tracklist. To further add to the confusion, on the band's own Facebook page on 24 April 2012, there were two pictures posted that were mock-ups of what the album may have looked like had it been released. The band left a comment on the front cover pic, saying: "Mr. Jeff Edwards put this together shortly after we got our copies of said unreleased album 'in star'". Note that the mock-up images are quite low-quality and there are some grammatical errors such as the title on the front cover being 'In Star' (two words) and on the back cover the tracklisting being in the wrong order, missing songs, and some song titles spelt wrong such as 'Re-inventing Me' (with the dash). Jim Corigliano confirmed to me that that album cover on the band's Facebook page was just dreamt up for a re-release that never happened. He also said: "The album was never officially released thus no release date but the mastering was completed in January of 2003. The track order on my site is the correct one."
